The directory supports both categories and sub-categories.

For now I've kept the directory "flat" -- ie am using subcategories only.

1) Increase the Number and Specificity of Subcategories

What I'd like to see is a "bit of redundancy" but "finer granularity" (ie shorter lists) by creating shorter, but more specific and therefore more useful, subcategories -- allowing applications to be listed in multiple categories and subcategories.

2) Developing Broader Categories

Some of the subcategories might do better as broader categories -- there are several that have so many listings that I believe they are virtually useless.

I think the best approach is to start breaking these longer lists down into shorter but more specific subcategories and developing broad categories de novo to organizes these subcategories.

Anyway, that's my thinking as I write this but I am currently writing this post in a complete vacuum since no one knows about this site yet ...

If you are reading this and have some thoughts about how to organize this directory to be more useful --

DON'T HESITATE TO SET ME STRAIGHT!

  • More subcategories which are highly specifc and shorter?
  • And what "broad categories" should be considered to organize these subcategories?

BTW,  I realize that with the creation of these specific categories -- there will be increasing "redundancy" as most web 2.0 applications deserve listings in "several categories and/or subcategories."   The directory can handle this, but I'll have to merge duplicate entries over time.  I think the temporary increase in "duplicates" vs longerterm utility of these list is a worthwhile tradeoff ...

any thoughts?

Maybe combine some categories? - imaging, video, music, etc. - into digital media - etc.?
